Stone House
Empire, Michigan
Designed as an off-grid cabin in the woods, this one-bedroom, one-den retreat is intended to be as much an integral part of its landscape as it is to provide shelter and solitude for its occupants. The green roof of the cabin intends to provide an offering to the context in exchange for the footprint the building. By using pile foundation, the building is intended to remain elevated above the ground, providing a continuous ground surface with little alteration to the landscape.
From a distance, the cabin is intentionally difficult to see. One of the project goals was to hide the building in the landscape so as to retain the natural beauty of the site. The stair tower acts as both the entrance and the way finding icon as visitors approach the site and wander the beautiful northern Michigan forest.
